Ughhh I sucked at onions for YEARS. I either did Ughhh I sucked at onions for YEARS.

I either didnโ€™t get the right kind for my area. Or I was growing them wrong. Or I was planting them wrong.

Everything changed when I decided to do these things which started with growing them from seed instead of buying slips (aka starts). And thenโ€ฆ

First: in Texas 8b, we donโ€™t start seeds until November and plant out in January for a June start to our harvest (AND I still have yellow Spanish onions still growing in August!!) Say what?!?

Second: I did the seed snail method to start my onion seeds. I have linked that reel in this reel. Click that to watch how to do that (and when I get back to this step this upcoming season, Iโ€™ll film another video). Iโ€™m crediting that method for my onion success.

Third: I gave my onions a hair cut to keep them in the 4-6โ€ range until planting out. This forced them to focus on bulb and roots and not beautiful greens.

Fourth: I always bottom watered. And I watched for algae hanging out at the bottom. Airflow at the bottom is also important to prevent the wrong things growing.

Fifth: once I planted out, I added straw for mulch and fed once during the growing season some fish emulsion.

And finally: once the bulbs started really forming, I spooned them (dug the dirt away from the bulb to really expose it to the sun) and BOOM biggggg onions bulbs.

I cannot wait to repeat this again this season.

Okay real talk โ€” Iโ€™ve been gardening since 2007 an Okay real talk โ€” Iโ€™ve been gardening since 2007 and I bought Buckwheat last year specifically to try cover cropping. It sat there. All season. Because I was scared to mess it up. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I LOVE to experiment. Ask anyone. And yet this one thing had me completely frozen.

So if youโ€™re sitting on a gardening dream right now thinking you need to know more, research more, wait until you have the perfect setup โ€” Iโ€™m going to save you some time.

You donโ€™t. You just start. Youโ€™ll mess it up a bit. Youโ€™ll figure it out. And your garden will be better for it.

(My soil certainly will be when I get back from Colorado and sow that Buckwheat. Finally. ๐Ÿ˜…)

The gardeners who build the most resilient, thriving gardens arenโ€™t the ones who studied the longest. Theyโ€™re the ones who stopped waiting and just got their hands dirty.

Forgot to share! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ And we are almost to the end o Forgot to share! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

And we are almost to the end of August. ๐Ÿ˜†

Well, now you know. And itโ€™s probably not looking any better than when I filmed this since weโ€™ve been stuck in a relentless heat bubble since I shimmied myself to Colorado for a few weeks of better weather.

Howโ€™s your garden hanging in?

Also - how is it that the weeds can thrive?? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
