๐Ÿ“ŒSave this for spring! Basil is one of the hardes ๐Ÿ“ŒSave this for spring!

Basil is one of the hardest-working bodyguards in my garden, and most people plant it next to their tomatoes because a blog told them to, without ever knowing what itโ€™s actually doing over there.

The strong oils you smell when you brush past it are what does the work. A lot of pests find their dinner by scent, and a good patch of basil muddies that signal enough that your tomatoes get harder to find.

It wonโ€™t make your garden pest-free (nothing will, and anyone promising that is probably selling you something in a spray bottle), but it tips the odds in your favor, and in an organic garden thatโ€™s how we play the game.

I tuck my basil right at the base of the tomatoes, close enough that the scents overlap, and I add a flower nearby (French Marigolds) to pull in the good bugs that eat whatever still shows up. Every crop in my garden gets at least one herb and one flower working for it.

If there isnโ€™t a single flower in your garden, you If there isnโ€™t a single flower in your garden, youโ€™re asking your vegetables to defend themselves alone and then wondering why the aphids won.

Flowers are the security team. Up top, alyssum and calendula are calling in hoverflies, lacewings, ladybugs and tiny parasitic wasps that will happily eat or lay eggs in the pests youโ€™ve been Googling at midnight.

Down below, French marigold roots are quietly messing with root-knot nematodes, and the whole root zone is feeding the microbes your soil runs on.

Pulling flowers out to squeeze in one more pepper plant is usually how you end up reaching for a spray bottle in July.

Every crop I grow gets a flower and an herb chosen for its specific pests, and thatโ€™s a big part of why the spray bottle mostly stays on the shelf around here.
